Agriculture plays an important part in the Welsh Economy. How can we do it better, that doesn’t literally cost the earth.

Intensification of our agricultural systems has had a devastating impact on the health of Welsh rivers. Each catchment has its own “flavour” of pollution. In this story we will cover:

• The impact of Intensive Poultry Units (IPUs) in the Wye Catchment, a SAC.
• The impact of intensive dairy production in the Towy Catchment
• The impact of maize production for “sustainable” energy production!
• The impact of increased stock levels, bigger farm machines and the fiction that is COGAP (Code of good agricultural practice) but not regulation.

Although some good work is happening in Welsh river catchments, continued deterioration is faster than remediation hence the trendlines continue south. Have some catchments reached the “tipping point” where the degradation of their biodiversity has reached a point of no return? Some believe so.
